Improve Your Indoor Air Quality By Choosing the Right Air Filter

Furnace filters help you manage the air quality in your Charlotte, North Carolina, home. A clean filter will protect your HVAC system by preventing clogs and damage that can result from the buildup of dirt and debris. Choosing the right filter is one way to improve your home’s indoor air quality. Pay attention to size, rating, and type when selecting a filter for your system.

Choose the Right Size

To function properly, your filter must be the correct size. One that is too small or large will cause air particles to bypass the device and enter your home or HVAC system. You can determine the size by checking the information on the old air filter, referring to the system’s manual, or measuring the space for the filter.

Filter Rating Matters

MERV, or minimum efficiency reporting value, measures how well the filter will remove airborne dust and particles. MERV ratings range from 1 to 16. The higher the number, the better the device’s ability to remove small particles. Even though higher values mean fewer contaminants pass through, the highest-rated types are not for residential use. A filter with a MERV rating between 1 and 12, will suffice for the average home.

Choosing the Right Type

If you live in an environment that is particularly dusty or you have pets, the filter you use will matter. The type of filter you choose is also important if persons in your home have respiratory problems or other illnesses. The most common filter options include:

  • Disposable fiberglass: These filters have ratings of 1 to 4 and help to keep your HVAC system clean.
  • Washable filters: Ratings for these reusable filters range from 1 to 4. Be sure to clean them regularly.
  • Disposable pleated: This type is the most common and has MERV ratings from 1 to 13. You will need to replace these filters every one to three months.
