Saving Tips for Spring

Horne HVAC

April 29, 2019

This week the forecast is calling for some above normal temperatures here in the Charlotte area. As the temperatures warm up outdoors, you can save energy in your home this spring by reprogramming your thermostat, scheduling HVAC system maintenance, and learning other ways to cut energy costs. But before the real summer heat arrives and you need to keep your AC unit running every day, here are a few tips to conserve energy while giving your system a break.

Open your windows and doors.

Opening your windows in the spring can help you manage both humidity and temperature in your home. Fresh air improves your indoor air quality and keeps your home comfortable while minimizing energy use. In the spring, open your windows at night for cooler cross-ventilation. Don’t forget to close your windows in the morning to keep the cool air in. Keep your inner doors open as well to promote air circulation.

Reprogram Your Thermostat

The settings on a programmable thermostat can keep your home warm and comfortable during the winter, but you should change the settings to correspond with the weather. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit to keep you comfortable during the warmer weather. Spring temperatures can be unpredictable, and the weather can turn cold without warning. Keep an eye on the local forecast and adjust your thermostat as necessary to keep your home comfortable.

Ceiling Fans 300x188 1Utilize Fans.

Whether you have ceiling fans or smaller fans, use them to your advantage as you create a cooler air flow throughout your home. Close your blinds and shades. As the sun rises, so does the temperature in your home. Radiant heat can turn your home into an oven. To block the hot rays, draw your curtains and close your blinds to maintain a cooler home while you’re away. Cool off at night by repeating tips one and two.

Prepare Your Air Conditioner

Over the winter, you probably don’t give much thought to your air conditioner, but you might need to turn on your air conditioner sooner than you think.
Before you use your air conditioner, vacuum the coils to remove any accumulated dust or debris. Clean or change the filter to allow adequate air flow, too. Now is a good time to put a reminder on your calendar to change the filter monthly.Remove clutter from the area around your ducts and make sure that they aren’t blocked by curtains or furniture. Remove dust to avoid circulating particles through your home when you turn on your air conditioner. By preparing your air conditioner to work efficiently and ensuring you have unrestricted airflow through your home, you can look forward to energy savings when you need to turn on your air conditioner.

A seasonal reminder: Don’t forget to call Horne Heating and Air perform a maintenance check on your AC system for optimal performance, all summer long. Contact us to schedule your appointment today with one of our trained professionals.
